What weighs us down?
People get the sense that going to waterloo, they're at the top universities - so there's pressure to prioritize school work above everything else. People think that there's a certain prestige. I think discounting stress is part of this academic culture. There's this attitude is "you're at the top, just keep up with it!" I think it does play a role in mental health. The attitude is “this is waterloo, everyone else has such a high work load, should I really be complaining?” It would do the University much better to actually talk about mental health - they talk about research and innovation but it's ironic because so much of that is based on creativity and human well being. X amount of hours does not equal X amount of work or productivity – the human brain doesn’t work like that. The University undermines that tremendously. For the sake of the university – and I don't even think it's about the University but the student - but even if we were to be talking about the University administration, it would do them some benefit to tap into that creativity by ensuring the wellbeing of students - I find it ironic that it’s neglected.
