What weighs us down?
I see mental health issues all the time among students and it’s a matter of concern for me. Students have immense pressure to build their future from now. Life seems to have become a CV building exercise. It indicates an endless and elusive pursuit of worldly accomplishments and happiness driven by a desire to create a perfect life. It’s a cultural pressure and I don’t know how we create a shift away from this. Students also feel the need to make other commitments, to volunteer and so on, and I’m not sure students are able to say no to certain things or to slow down. When I was a student, the competition was merely in the background, it wasn’t in your face all the time. A little bit of anxiety is always good, otherwise you become placid and complacent. It’s a fine line, but where do you draw that line? Beyond a certain point the pressure is not healthy - and here I have definitely noticed that we’ve crossed the threshold.
